There’s nothing easier than a good salt dough recipe. This one is perfect, and I’ll bet you have the ingredients in your pantry right now. Go check, I’ll wait. 😉
2 cups all purpose flour
1 cup salt
1 cup water
Blend, knead, play! (Note, you may need to add a little extra flour as you knead if the dough is still a bit sticky.)
When you have a tomb that you are pleased with, you may either allow it to air dry ( can take up to a week to fully dry, depending on thickness), or bake in an oven set to 150 for 4-5 hours. (They do not necessarily need to be dried thoroughly to paint if your child is careful.) I used a ball of foil in the mouth of the tomb to help support the “cavern”, then took it out when it was dry enough to hold shape on its own. I recommend keeping your tombs on the smaller side. Larger is a lot harder to hold the cavern without caving in.
For younger children, make their tomb ahead of time and allow them to decorate with markers or washable watercolor paints.

A new activity that we created this year was giving each kid a jumbo easter egg, Jesus, a cross, and play-dough. I helped them squish the playdough around the egg halves and encouraged them to put Jesus in the tomb as I told a short sentence story of Easter. They pressed the egg pieces together and we counted, “one day, two days, three days!” Then we opened the tomb and took Jesus out, joyfully exclaiming, “He’s alive! Jesus is not in the tomb anymore! He died, but He’s not dead anymore! Jesus is alive!”
